"The Bean"
Welcome to friends, family and the occasional passerby who enjoys investing in the stock market. Things have gotten very busy at the Bean lately, so we have scaled down the cafe to its bare, most important essentials. As you can see, we have recently made some renovations to our walls as well. In an effort to make things a little more user friendly and easier on the eyes (and us), we have streamlined the site and cut out some of the dead wood. We hope you like the new atmosphere.
For those of you new to the WSB, you may be asking yourself, "What does a bean and Wall Street have to do with each other?" Not long ago, we had grand plans of opening hundreds of stock market themed coffee houses all across the southeast. Customers could sip their morning joe while perusing the latest financial literature, or sit back with a pastry and watch CNBC, FOXBiz, Bloomberg or StockTwitsTV on giant plasma television screens. But alas, we have decided to go the virtual route instead. The coffee may be lacking, but the beans are in stock!
The Wall Street Bean was created on June 1, 2009, as a fun, convenient and informative way to present the top companies each month, the WSB20, from the stock screen we have been developing over the last seven years. Every month a select group of stocks are scored against 80+ statistical parameters. Benchmarks are set for each parameter, thus the more benchmarks passed by a particular stock, the higher its score. The result is finding companies with solid fundamentals that are top-notch in their industry.
Below are two partial EXCEL snapshots of the BeanScreen. The first is the screen itself. A company's ticker is entered at the top left of the page. Next, financial stats are generated using Randy Harmelink's "add-in" program. The stats are then screened against corresponding benchmarks set by us, producing a stock's current score. The second snapshot displays the historical record of the BeanScreen. Scores are entered monthly for each stock. The final score that determines a company's WSB20 ranking can be seen in the "Total Average" column at the far right. Of course, the super-complex formula used to calculate a stock's final score is a secret recipe!
Screener

History

Every month we select three stocks we believe are attractive from a valuation standpoint and toss them into the Bargain Bin. A tally is kept on the Bean Counter (updated every few days or so), showing their performance over the last few months versus the S&P 500 index. By no means is the Bean recommending any "buys" or "sells" here, just putting in our two cents and hoping to get some feedback from all of you. Enjoy!
